Thanksgiving Travel: What Actually Fits in Your Personal Item

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is reliably one of the busiest travel days in the country, and the Sunday after is worse. Full flights, full overhead bins, delayed connections and a security line that starts outside the building.

None of that is fixable. What is fixable is how you move through it. Here is the version that goes smoothly.

The single rule: nothing you need goes in the hold

Thanksgiving week is the week bags go missing, because volume is at its peak and connections are tight. If a bag has to be checked, it should contain nothing you would mind arriving two days late.

Which means: medication, chargers, documents, a change of clothes and anything you are giving to somebody stay on your body or under the seat.

The three-layer system

  1. Carry-on overhead — clothes, shoes, the bulk. Not opened until you land.
  2. Personal item under the seat — everything for the flight and everything you would hate to lose.
  3. Crossbody on your body — ID, phone, wallet, boarding pass, keys, medication.

The third layer is what makes the difference at a gate. When a flight is oversold and they start asking people to gate-check carry-ons, you can hand over the roller bag without a moment's hesitation, because everything that matters is already on you.

A City Plus can do both the personal-item and on-your-body jobs.

A City or City Plus covers this comfortably. If you want one bag doing both the second and third jobs, size up to the Plus.

What to put in the personal item

  • All medication, in its original packaging, in a quantity that covers a two-day delay.
  • Chargers and a battery pack. Airport outlets are all occupied on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Assume you will not find one.
  • A change of shirt and clean underwear. Feels excessive until a connection is cancelled.
  • Snacks. Every food outlet in the airport has a line, and flight service is slower on full flights.
  • An empty water bottle to fill after security.
  • Headphones and something to read — delays are the default, not the exception.
  • A folded tote. For gate-checking, for leftovers on the way home, for the things that always come back with you.
  • Hand cream and lip balm. Cabin air plus November.

Traveling with food

Thanksgiving is the one week people fly with pie.

Solid food is generally fine through security in a carry-on. Anything spreadable, pourable or gel-like — gravy, cranberry sauce, soup — is treated as a liquid and is subject to the usual limits. Pies and cakes are permitted but may be pulled for additional screening, so pack them where they are easy to take out.

Rules can change and screening is at the officer's discretion, so check the current guidance before you fly rather than relying on last year's experience.

Gifts, if you are bringing them

Do not wrap anything before you fly. Wrapped gifts can be opened for screening, and being asked to unwrap something at a security checkpoint on the busiest day of the year is a specific kind of misery.

Small, flat, unbreakable gifts travel best.

Pack the paper flat and wrap when you arrive. Small, flat, unbreakable gifts travel best — one of the reasons small leather goods are such reliable presents. A card holder or a coin purse takes almost no room and does not need protecting.

The airport itself

Three things that help on a heavy travel day:

  • Wear the coat, don't pack it. A winter coat is a quarter of a carry-on. Wear it, and use the pockets.
  • Keep your ID in the same place every time. An outside pocket of a crossbody means you are not excavating a bag at every checkpoint with a line behind you.
  • Wear the bag through security. A crossbody comes off and goes in a bin in one motion, and goes back on in one motion. A tote with loose contents does not.

Coming home

The Sunday return is the harder direction, because you are carrying more than you left with — leftovers, gifts, the thing your mother insisted you take.

The folded tote in your personal item is the answer. It costs nothing to carry out and solves the entire problem on the way back.

And if you are flying to somebody else's house for a few days, the travel collection has the wash bags and small pieces that make living out of a bag feel less chaotic.

Safe travels. Get to the airport earlier than feels reasonable.
