Stadium Bag Policies: What Size Purse Can You Actually Bring?

There is a particular kind of misery that involves standing outside a stadium twenty minutes before kickoff, being told your bag is half an inch too big, and walking back to a parking lot you can no longer find.

It is entirely avoidable. Here is how bag policies actually work at American venues, and what to carry so you never have this conversation.

The NFL rule, in plain numbers

Every NFL stadium runs a clear bag policy, and it comes down to two allowances.

  • A clear bag up to 12" x 6" x 12". Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC. The strap size does not matter.
  • A small non-clear bag up to 4½" x 6½". This is the important one. Wallets, wristlets, clutches and small crossbody bags all qualify at this size, and they do not need to be see-through.

You are generally allowed one of each; the clear bag for the bulk, and the small purse for the things you would rather not display to forty thousand people.

One detail worth knowing: several venues specify that a small crossbody must be worn over the shoulder or across the body, not around the waist. A belt bag worn at the waist is refused at some gates even when it is under the size limit. If you are going to a game, wear the strap across the body and you avoid the argument entirely.

Everywhere else varies - so double check!

The NFL rule is the strictest and the most consistent. Beyond it, policies diverge:

  • MLB is generally more relaxed, though several ballparks have moved to clear-bag or small-bag rules of their own.
  • NBA and NHL arenas mostly allow small bags, often with a size cap in the region of 14" x 14" x 6", but it is set venue by venue.
  • College football largely mirrors the NFL clear bag rule.
  • Concert venues and festivals are the least predictable. Some allow a normal purse, some are clear-bag only, some ban bags entirely and provide lockers.

The rule that never fails: check the venue's own website the week of the event, not the league's. Policies change between seasons, and the gate staff go by the venue.

What to carry so you are always fine

A small crossbody at or under the 4½" x 6½" allowance gets you into essentially any venue in the country, clear-bag policy or not. That is a genuinely useful thing to own.

The Original Mini: phone, cards, keys, lipstick, and under the small-bag allowance.

Look at the mini bags — the Original Mini and City Mini are the shapes designed for exactly this: phone, cards, keys, lipstick, nothing else. Wear it across the body, keep it in front of you in a crowd, and you have a bag that works for a game, a concert, a festival and a night out.

Measure before you go. The dimensions that matter are the bag's own, not the strap, and gate staff use a sizer.

What to actually bring to a game

  • Phone and a portable charger. Tickets are digital and stadium cell service is dreadful. A dead phone means no ticket home.
  • One or two cards. Most stadiums are now cashless. A slim card holder takes up almost no room.
  • ID. Non-negotiable if you plan to buy a drink.
  • Keys - and a note on your phone of where you parked.
  • Lip balm, hand sanitizer, a hair tie.
  • A poncho, not an umbrella. Umbrellas are prohibited at most stadiums. Ponchos fold to nothing.
  • Sunscreen for an early-season afternoon game, which is warmer than the calendar suggests.

Three things that get confiscated more often than people expect

  1. Umbrellas. Genuinely prohibited at most venues, whatever the forecast.
  2. Full-size water bottles. Some venues allow an empty, sealed or clear bottle; many allow none. Check.
  3. Seat cushions with pockets. Often treated as a bag and measured accordingly.

The wider point

A small crossbody is not just a stadium bag. It is the bag for anywhere that is crowded, standing, long and on your feet; a game, an outdoor concert, a street festival, a bar with no table. The reason it works is the same reason it works at a stadium: it is small enough that nobody questions it, and it stays on your body when your hands are full.

Browse the small crossbody bags, and if you want to change its character for evenings, a chain strap does it in seconds.

Bag policies change. Always confirm on the venue's official website before you travel.
