How to Wear a Crossbody Bag Over 50: Comfort, Proportion and the Strap That Changes Everything
A crossbody bag should sit at or just above the hip bone, with the strap adjusted so the bag rests against you rather than swinging. For most women over 50 the comfortable choice is a lightweight leather bag in the Original or City size, worn on a strap wide enough not to dig in, in a colour that works with the coats you already own. The strap is the part most people get wrong, and it is also the easiest to fix.
Where the bag should sit

Too long and the bag bounces against your thigh and pulls at the shoulder. Too short and it sits under the arm and makes everything look bunched up. The sweet spot is the top of the hip, where your hand falls naturally when you reach for it.
Our Original strap adjusts up to 125cm and the Original Plus to 142cm, which covers everyone from petite to tall, and over a thick winter coat. Set the strap once, with the coat you wear most, and you rarely need to touch it again.
Strap length and width
Width matters more than people expect. A narrow strap carrying a heavy bag concentrates the weight on one point of the shoulder. A wider fabric or woven strap spreads it, and sits more comfortably over a jumper or a coat. Our Chiswick cargo bag comes with a 4cm-wide strap for exactly this reason.
Because every one of our bags comes with two free straps of your choice, you can have a wide woven strap for daytime comfort and a slimmer leather or gold chain strap for the evening, and swap between them in seconds. There are more than 2,000 combinations across the range, so the same bag can look quite different on different days. See the straps collection.
Lightweight leather

Weigh the empty bag in your hand before you decide. A bag that is heavy before you put anything in it is a bag you stop wearing. Full-grain leather can be light if the bag is cut sensibly, without unnecessary panels and hardware. Our lightweight crossbody bags are the styles we recommend if you have a shoulder or neck that complains, and all of them are lined with easy-clean interiors.
The other half of lightweight is what you put in. A slim purse or card holder instead of a full purse takes a surprising amount out of the bag, and a Mini forces the question nicely.
Proportion
A bag should be in proportion to you and to what you are wearing. A general rule: the smaller the frame, the smaller the bag, and a structured bag over a structured coat looks neater than a slouchy one. The Original (20 x 16 x 8cm) suits most people. The City (23 x 16.5 x 7cm) is flatter and sits closer to the body, which many women find more flattering over a fitted coat. The Plus sizes work well on taller frames or over a long winter coat.
Our handbags for women over 50 collection brings together the styles we recommend for comfort and proportion, with the sizes and straps that suit them.
Colours that flatter
Choose the bag colour against your coats and knitwear rather than against a single outfit. Navy and black go with almost everything, and navy is softer against grey hair and paler skin than black. Tan and chestnut warm up a camel or cream coat. Stone is the quiet choice for spring and summer; almond beige does the same job this autumn.
If you want a little more, this season's shades (burnt rhubarb, chocolate plum, olive green and dark maroon) are rich without being loud, and a leopard print or quilted finish gives a plain outfit a point of interest. You can browse by colour, from navy crossbody bags to chestnut.
How to wear it
- Over the coat, not under it. The bag should be reachable without unbuttoning anything.
- Across the body, with the bag at the front of the hip. It is more secure and easier on the back than a shoulder bag.
- Swap to a short strap and wear it on the shoulder for dinner or the theatre.
- Match the hardware to your jewellery if you can. Most of our bags have gold hardware; some styles come in silver.
- Keep the inside tidy. A bag with three compartments, like the Original, stays lighter and easier to use than one deep pocket, because you stop carrying things you have forgotten about.
A note on the City Slim and the Minis

If comfort is the whole point, consider going smaller than you think. The City Slim is our flattest bag, built for a phone, cards and keys, and the Original Mini (16 x 14 x 6.5cm) and City Mini (18 x 12 x 5cm) are light enough that you forget they are there. They suit the days when the big bag stays at home, which for many of us is most days.
Every bag comes with two free straps and a keyring, together worth £63 in the UK and $77 in the US, so you can get the comfort and the look right from day one. All of our bags are handcrafted in 100% full-grain leather and covered by a 365-day warranty with 30-day returns.
